Struggle of Empires
« on: January 30, 2008, 11:42:57 pm »
I don't generally go in for historical games... and I really don't go in for historical games involving colonialism... but I did enjoy this game, which really surprised me.

Struggle of Empires doesn't really look like much, at first glance.  The colors are a bit muted, and the text is a bit hard to read because on some of the chips it's a bit small.  The rules are also a bit confusing, too.  The feature that I really enjoyed about the game, however, was that it was exactly three "wars" long, and that some developments could be carried over from war to war, while others had to be acquired anew.  I liked the feature that some chits were very useful if acquired early in the game, but essentially useless or not cost effective if acquired later.   And, there were lots of options to choose from.

I did read later that the game came under fire from several groups, as some of it's options are accurate to the period, but not very politically correct... for example, there is the option to develop slavery, which is profitable and can be a good return if acquired early in the game... this is somewhat historically accurate, but sent some politically correct types into fits.....
